"I was at a loss with the subject luminance values, and I confess I was thinking about bracketing several exposures, when I suddenly realized that I knew the luminance of the moon – 250 c/ft2. Using the Exposure Formula, I placed this luminance on Zone VII; 60 c/ft2 therefore fell on Zone V, and the exposure with the filter factor o 3x was about 1 second at f/32 with ASA 64 film. I had no idea what the value of the foreground was, but I hoped it barely fell within the exposure scale. Not wanting to take chances, I indicated a water-bath development for the negative.

As part of her 10 year retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Zoe Strauss, has put up billboards of her work all around Philadelphia.

"the project is loosely structured around the themes of the Odyssey, presenting an epic story about journey and homecoming. For ten years Strauss installed her annual I-95 exhibition in South Philadelphia which she describes as an “epic narrative about the beauty and struggle of everyday life.” The Billboard Project represents another telling of that narrative"

Billboard number 1, is located not only on the corner of where I live, it is also located on the corner where I first encountered a Zoe Strauss print back in 2002/2003. It was a photograph glued to a piece of wood and nailed to a pole on the corner of Passyunk and Reed. This photograph led me to more of her work, which led me to admiring her work, which led me to contacting her in regards to an internship, which she accepted, which led to a long friendship which continues to this day.

Zoe has been not only a mentor and inspiration to me, she has been a great and generous friend. She is Philadelphia to me, her and her family have always welcomed me with open arms, and they've helped me to view Philadelphia as my second home.

On a personal level, this photograph at this location. brings tears to my eyes. From a small photograph on a piece of wood nailed to a pole, to a giant billboard, a 10 year retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art....I could not be more proud of you Zoe!

"What do you mean, 'By the hand?'" a friend asked when I told her that recently I had been making black-and-white optical prints, for which the hand was crucial. The printer's hands, I explained, not technological wizardry, manipulate light and shadow; and the hand has human limits. Each print varies slightly. The limits and idiosyncrasies of optical printing were a welcome change from the maddeningly infinite possibilities and perfectionism of digital printing.

My first pictures were made with Kodachrome slide film in the early 1970s, and were fully resolved as projected images on a white wall in a darkened room. They remain my most direct experience of photography. I later turned to colour negative film, for its greater tonal latitude and the ability to make prints directly from the negative. While I continue to shoot negative film to this day, for nearly a decade I have been scanning my negatives and modulating them in Photoshop before outputting them on traditional chromogenic colour paper. It's a hybrid process.

My greatest fear is that as a discarded medium and corporate outcast, analogue will no longer be essential to visual education. Many young people will not know the difference between hand and button, they will only know the button; and their use of technology will be constricted by their ignorance of hand work. They will not perceive the qualities of optical photography because their eyes will only know digital imagery.

When I last visited Berlin, I got lost on the way to a friend's house. While staring at my iPhone map I heard a voice call: "Mitch, Mitch!" and looked up to find him waving at me from his car as he waited for the light to change. I climbed into the car. A GPS receiver has more than once helped me out of a jam, but it is hard to describe how lovely it felt to pull my eyes off my screen and let a friend guide me"

I wanted to share with you one of my favorite photographs right now. "The Family" taken by Paul Strand in Luzzara, Italy in 1953.

I've been thinking a lot about family portraits lately. I keep wanting to take photographs of my family, but there is a hesitation in me whenever the possibility presents itself. For instance, when I was in Spain this past month, I wanted to take a portrait of my grandmother along with my mom and her sisters. But I could never find the right moment to ask her to sit for a photograph. I kept wanting to and wanting to but then never actually doing it. In the end, I took a photograph of my mother and her 2 sisters. And never got one of my grandmother. I hate that feeling of not accomplishing something you wanted to. And it upsets me. It seems like in the past 2 and half years, I have been very hesitant to photograph people. I get shy or just can't find the right way to ask. And even though I have the desire to photograph a person, and in my head, I see a great photograph, I end up not taking a photograph. I'm not sure why this is happening.

Any way, back to "The Family", there is a scene in "Paul Strand: Under the Darkcloth" which talks a bit more about the photograph...skip to minute: 13:21 in the youtube clip. (btw you can instantly watch "Under the Darkcloth" in it's entirety on Netflix right now)

Great piece on NPR about a new book out containing hundreds of letters written between Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz. (link: here) (buy the book: here) They wrote 25,000 letters to each other between 1915 and 1946..." sometimes two and three a day, some of them 40 pages long" (WOW!)

I really love reading letters. I have this great book with the letters of Ansel Adams (link: here) And it's amazing to read the amount of thought and effort that went into expressing oneself to another person back then. That effort is completely gone in this modern day of emails and tweets, and facebook and tumblr. I mean, I even find it hard to sit and read people's blogs and sometimes emails if they are more the 3 sentences long. We are just so instant now-a-days, everything has to be quick and to the point, and if you can't understand it in 10 seconds, you move on to the next thing.

The Ansel Adams book inspired me to re-do this blog, but unfortunately I haven't done so well in expressing myself in words. It's a struggle for someone like me. And I wish I could write with the eloquence of Ansel, Georgia, or Alfred. I guess I just need some more practice.

The great story about Vivian Maier and the guy who found a treasure trove of her lost negatives (link: here), was blogged about ad nauseam a few months (or year?) ago. I just started reading 'My First Summer in the Sierra" by John Muir this weekend. And was spellbound by the great photographs in the book. They were taken by Herbert W. Gleason. Unfortunately there isn't very much information about him on the web. But you can read more about him in this great essay: Photography and Place by Frank Gohlke

Then I increased the angle—and suddenly the entire courtyard scene unfolded itself in front of my eyes. The ladies were speechless. Was I practicing black magic on them? Then I turned the picture and read Francis Bauer's French and English inscription: "Monsieur Niépce's first successful experiment of fixing permanently the image from Nature," and the date below, 1827. Only a historian can understand my feeling at that moment. I had reached the goal of my research and held the foundation stone of photography in my hand. I felt myself in communication with Niépce. Your nightmare existence in a trunk is over," I thought. "[George] Potonniée was right. At long last you will be recognized as the inventor of photography. This picture will prove it to all the world."
