Self portraits.

The great story about Vivian Maier and the guy who found a treasure trove of her lost negatives (link: here), was blogged about ad nauseam a few months (or year?) ago. I loved the story and thought her work was beautiful, but was reluctant to think any more about them for some reason...until I came across these self portraits she did (link: here) which are quite breathtaking.

Self portraits are great explorations and learning experiences. Who am i? What am i doing? What is this life all about? What does my city look like? What does this camera make things look like? Is this really what i look like?

I got ramblin' all on my mind.

I got ramblin', I got ramblin' on my mind
I got ramblin', I got ramblin' all on my mind
Hate to leave my baby, but you treats me so unkind

I got mean things, I got mean things all on my mind
Little girl, little girl, I got mean things all on my mind
Hate to leave you here, babe, but you treats me so unkind

Runnin' down to the station, catch the first mail train I see
(spoken: I think I hear her comin' now)
Runnin' down to the station, catch the old first mail train I see
I got the blues about Miss So-and-So and the child got the blues about me

And I'm leavin' this mornin', with my arm' fold' up and cryin'
And I'm leavin' this mornin', with my arm' fold' up and cryin'
Hate to leave my baby, but she treats me so unkind

I got mean things, I've got mean things on my mind
I got mean things, I got mean things all on my mind
I got to leave my baby, well, she treats me so unkind

An inner life.

Via: ASX
Great art is the outward expression of an inner life in the artist, and this inner life will result in his personal vision of the world. No amount of skillful invention can replace the essential element of imagination. One of the weaknesses of much abstract painting is the attempt to substitute the inventions of the intellect for a pristine imaginative conception. The inner life of a human being is a vast and varied realm and does not concern itself alone with stimulating arrangements of color, form, and design. The term "life" as used in art is something not to be held in contempt, for it implies all of existence, and the province of art is to react to it and not to shun it. Painting will have to deal more fully and less obliquely with life and nature's phenomena before it can again become great. - Edward Hopper

Lock of Mary Pickford's hair.

Someone loan me $2,000 - $3,000, please.

Mounted inside the lid is a color print of Pickfair. In 1928, in the wake of her mother's death, Pickford cuts her famous curls in front of journalists. Her hair was a symbol of female virtue and the story created a sensation, making the front page of The New York Times and other newspapers. Includes a length of blond curls from Pickford's wig. Herbert W. Gleason.

I just started reading 'My First Summer in the Sierra" by John Muir this weekend. And was spellbound by the great photographs in the book. They were taken by Herbert W. Gleason. Unfortunately there isn't very much information about him on the web. But you can read more about him in this great essay: Photography and Place by Frank Gohlke
